Two Easy DIY Facials To Try At Home

Avocado Almond Lemon Deep Cleanse

Skin Type: Oily, Combination, Acne Prone, or Congested Skin

Purpose: Deep cleansing and gentle exfoliation

Oil cleansing is all the rage, right? Well, this is basically the same thing, except it's fat-cleansing, using an avocado instead of a liquid oil. The concept behind oil cleansing is that oil, when massaged into the skin, will bond with oil, dirt, makeup, and grime on your skin, and when you wipe your skin clean, you remove these substances with the oil. Adding almond meal brings a touch of gentle exfoliation (use oat flour if you're allergic to nuts). Because it’s a very deep cleanse, once a week is enough—you can strip too much oil from the skin if you oil cleanse excessively, and the result can be increased sebum production by the skin. The addition of lemon juice brings a mild astringent quality to this treatment.

DIY Instructions

  • ¼ avocado
  • 2T almond flour/meal
  • A lemon wedge

Mash the avocado, almond meal, and lemon juice with a fork or a mini-blender until you’ve made a smooth paste. Prepare the skin by holding a warm, wet washcloth on the face for about 30-60 seconds. Work the mixture into the skin of your face and neck, massaging gently in a circular motion for up to two minutes. Pay special attention to any areas of congestion, like the sides of your nose, the area under your bottom lip, and between your eyes. Rinse copiously with your fingers and warm water, then wipe the skin clean with a very warm, clean cloth.

Honey Cacao Banana Flax Face Mask

Skin Type: Dull, Dry, Dehydrated, or Irritated Skin

Purpose: Deep hydration and plumping

There’s so much goodness in this simple mask. Flax seeds provide essential fatty acids and banana gives a vitamin and potassium boost to the cells. Raw honey is antibacterial and very softening for the skin. And raw cacao provides an antioxidant boost, as well as a gentle firming effect from its natural caffeine content.

DIY Instructions

  • 1T ground flax seeds
  • 1T raw cacao powder
  • 1T raw honey
  • ¼ banana

Combine ground flax seeds, banana, honey, and cacao with a fork until smooth, and let the mixture sit for 5-10 minutes. Add a splash of hot water if needed for texture. Apply to your clean face and neck, and leave for 20 minutes. You’ll want to step into the shower to massage this one off because it’s really messy! Make sure it’s all rinsed, and follow with your usual facial care products. Your skin should feel plump and hydrated for the next day or two, so enjoy it!!
